More than just eating: philosophers take a beating, fight for justice in Pakistan

Nothing to do with food justice, but it’s good to see philosophy students and faculty putting both their bodies and their minds on the line for a worthy cause.

In Berlin I spent some time in the foyer to the Humboldt University, where there is a Cold War era mural with large-gold-lettering facing you as you enter the great hall.  The quotation is famous, from Marx: “Up to now philosophers have simply interpreted the world in various ways.  The point, however, is to change it.”

At least they’re trying in Pakistan.

"philosophers" should be construed broadly!

Greenblading: The land

"Sunset on Five Finger Lakes" Poster Print by McCarthy

This is the land we live on, that supports us, that nurtures our bodies and souls. If we destroy it, where are we going to go?

We do not inherit this land from our ancestors. We borrow it from our children.

On just eating: New data on economic effects of fracking — does this change the calculus?

not very tasty

Now that I’m a part-time resident of Pennsylvania, I’m particularly interested to hear Elizabeth and others respond to this much-forwarded op-ed in the WSJ today (not, obviously, an unbiased source).  Is NY missing an opportunity, or is it dodging the bullet that Pennsylvania seems inclined to bite?

This hearkens back to our old debates about the production of local jobs and tax income, but it provides some real data coming out of Pennsylvania.

The claim that there has been no certifiable environmental damage, of course, seems ludicrous.  But is it a bullet worth biting?

To Taste: Getting the Concept

Growers and customers share the joy of weird-looking heirloom veggies at the farmer’s market, but that’s not enough:

Everyone has to “get the concept” of why it’s important to grow organic and buy local.
